BOWMANVILLE, Ontario August 29 - Matt Downs held off a hard charging
Kyle Marcelli to take his fourth IMSA Lites presented by Frisby
Performance Tire victory at the Mobil 1 presents the Mosport Grand Prix.
Matt's brother Lucas Downs started on pole with Matt second and Marcelli
in third. Marcelli moved to second on the first lap and then set his
sights on Lucas. Lucas and Marcelli made contact, allowing Matt to slip
by and take the lead.
"I got a decent start, but Kyle got on the inside of me in three," Downs
said about the start. "They spun in front of me and it's like the Red
Sea parted."
The contact between Lucas and Marcelli caused Marcelli to spin and fall
to eleventh place. After a short caution period Marcelli made a
brilliant drive through the field up to second place before the
30-minute race ended.
"I did what I could," Marcelli said after the race. "The Intersport guys
did a great job with my car. I love this track and my car was hooked
up."
On his way through the field the determined Marcelli set the fast lap of
the race, giving him the pole position for Round 12 taking place Sunday
afternoon before the American LeMans Series Grand Prix of Mosport.
Current Lites One point leader Joel Feinberg finished fourth followed by
Jon Brownson. The fifth place finish for Brownson is his highest finish
in the 2009 season.
John Weisberg won his fifth Lites Two race of the season. Weisberg
started on the pole and had very little challenge from Michael Hill and
Michal Chlumecky, who both had mechanical troubles.
Three rounds remain in the 2009 season. Round 12 will take place Sunday,
August 30 at 1:30 p.m. The final two rounds of the season will be part
of the Petit LeMans weekend at Road Atlanta.
