KAWARTHA SPEEDWAY: 100 laps for the first time and a top 10 finish for Kelly Wood

FRASERVILLE, ON - Entering the 100 lap Late Model race for the first time with only 5 races behind her was going to be a tough challenge for Kelly and her team. The night was Friday, Aug. 21 and the track was Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough, ON.

Tires are the most important part of any race car. Kelly and her pit crew have been working hard to get to grips with the many adjustments needed to run the Goodyear tires. “We need to start the evening with the right size tires.” Commented Garry (Crew Chief.) This does not always work out and Friday was one of those nights. We pick out tires at the track and cannot always get the size we would prefer so we have to compromise. “After running the heat race, we new we had a really good car,” said Kelly, passing half of the field from the back.

“Taking the green flag of the 100 lap feature on pole with 21 of the best Late Model racers behind me was a great feeling,” said Kelly. After 25 laps, she was still leading the race but the car had gotten really tight and she was passed by 2 cars. At lap 54 she was running a strong 3rd place when the first caution of the night came out. Two more cautions followed within short succession, and unfortunately following the second of these, Kelly had to take avoiding action to miss a pile up, restarting in 13th with only 20 laps to go, she drove to a 9th place finish.

“I would like to thank all the fans for coming and supporting all the drivers at the “Fan Appreciation Night” at Kawartha. It was a great turn out and I would like to thank my crew: mom, Garry, Chad, Kyle and Cole for all their hard work and support.”
