By Tommy Goudge (August 18, 2009) – The Southern Ontario Sprints tour returns to the place where it all began this Saturday night when Clarke Drainage Contractors Ltd. presents round seven of the SOS season at South Buxton Raceway. South Buxton was the site of the very first SOS event on May 18, 1996, and twenty-five total SOS feature races have run at the unique D-shaped clay oval located South of the city of Chatham.
Justin Martin of Shedden leads the tour back to South Buxton for the second time this season. Martin took the points lead after round four at Brighton on July 11 and extended it slightly on August 8 back at Brighton with a third place finish. Adam West from nearby Ridgetown currently sits second in the points standings, just eleven markers out of the lead. West claimed a popular hometown feature win, in the last SOS visit to South Buxton on May 23 this season. Chatham’s John Riegling finished third in that event, followed by Martin, and two-time SOS champion Warren Mahoney of Lefroy, who claimed the feature win at South Buxton last August.
Following Martin and West in the championship standings are Warren Mahoney, Sutton’s Bob Crawford, and Rookie of the Year award contender Tyler Rand from Consecon. Rick Wilson of Joyceville sits sixth, followed by Burford’s Jamie Collard, Dick Mahoney from Newmarket, three time and defending SOS champion Glenn Styres of Ohsweken, and impressive rookie Travis Cunningham of Grimsby.
Some drivers expected in competition on Saturday night include Belleville, Michigan’s Dain Naida, two time SOS champion Keith Dempster of Alton, 2008 SOS Rookie of the Year Ryan Hunsinger from Brantford, and St. Thomas driver John Watson. Naida claimed his first feature win since 2006 earlier this year in weekly competition at Ohsweken Speedway, and hopes to become the second member of his family to claim a feature win at South Buxton. Hunsinger also owns an Ohsweken feature win this year, while Watson recently claimed his first career feature win in wingless competition in Michigan.
Other drivers expected at South Buxton include Chris Durand of Port Stanley, who will be making his first appearance with the SOS, rookie Jason Martin from Shedden, Mount Hope veteran Frank Baranowski, and former TQ Midget racer Jim Munsie, who made his first ever appearance with SOS on August 8. Along with the stars of the Southern Ontario Sprints tour, South Buxton’s UMP Late Model, UMP Modified, Sport Stock, and Comp 4 divisions are also on the card, creating a full night of affordable family entertainment!
