Delaware Speedway: Five Dollar Wednesday Finale / Chaos Car Bonus Program

LAST CHANCE TO SEE THE KROWN JUNIOR RACING LEAGUE IN 2009!

Wednesday evening is the season finale for Five-Dollar Wednesdays featuring the Krown Body Maintenance Junior Racing League at Delaware Speedway.  Racing starts at 6:45 pm, admission for adults is $5, kids twelve and under are free of charge.  Competition on Championship Wednesday will be made up of two divisions, Junior (ages 8-12) and Senior (ages 13-17) years old.  The drivers will be competing in their half-scale race vehicles on the inside road course at Delaware Speedway.  The Junior Division will be running three eight-lap heats followed by the senior division’s pair of ten-lap heats.  Both divisions will then run their final feature events of the year, with the Junior Division running twenty laps, the Senior Division running twenty-five laps.

The Junior Division points standings are tight heading into the championship evening.  Maddison Van Grinsven (#22) of Strathroy leads the points standings by eleven points over Komoka’s Lucas “Maddog” Manning (#66).  Van Grinsven has a pair of feature wins to her credit, Manning also has a win.  Both drivers had their wins early in the season and have been placing strongly in events and had solid classroom scores to keep them at the top of the leader board.  Not mathematically eliminated, but with quite a drive ahead of him if he were to pull off an upset, Jaxon Jacobs (#3) of London sits in third, twenty-nine points back from the leader.

The Senior Division point standings have a much larger spread then the Junior Division.  Wednesday’s event is all but a championship coronation for London’s “Cowboy” Kris Lawrence.  Lawrence leads the points by eighty-two over the next closest challengers.  The battle for second place is much closer, however, with Jordan Lawrence (#28) of London tied with Jonathon Van Grinsven (#99) of Strathroy.  Jordan Lawrence is the younger brother of points leader Kris Lawrence, while Jonathon Van Grinsven is the older brother of Junior Division points leader Maddison Van Grinsven.

The Krown Body Maintenance Junior Racing League is a program for 8-17 year olds that teaches the ins and outs of stock car racing.  The program, which began in 1997, is run as a miniature version of a Friday Delaware Speedway NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing program including technical inspection, officiating, safety crews and even announcing.  For the first time on Wednesday’s event is also being recorded by the speedway’s media team, Checkered Flag Media, from multiple angles for later assembly into a simulated television broadcast.

As part of the Krown Body Maintenance Junior Racing League drivers participate in the racing program, and attend classroom sessions. These are held after every race and count towards the end of the year championship. The sessions teach the young drivers about subjects such as safety, public speaking, taking responsibility, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, vehicle maintenance, sponsorship, aerodynamics, engines and much more.

The next racing event on the big track at Delaware Speedway is NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action presented by Maple Leaf Food Services and Coca-Cola.  Gates open at 6:00 pm, practice runs from 6:00-7:00 pm, racing starts at 8:00 pm.  The speedway is gearing up for one of its biggest weekends of the year, The Great Canadian Race Weekend (September 4, 5, 6).  Early bird tickets for the weekend are only available until Friday night through the speedway website, www.delawarespeedway.com

ULTIMATE SANDBLASTING & COATING CHAOS CAR BONUS PROGRAM

Delaware Speedway is pleased to announce the introduction of a new bonus program for the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars.

“The Chaos drivers poured a lot into this entertainment program without asking for a thing in return,” said Chaos director John Houghton.  “As the class grows and increases in popularity with both drivers and fans, the new structure is aimed at improving the caliber of the shows, while not encouraging drivers to escalate the costs of their vehicles.”

With over 15 cars in the “Chaos Fleet” available for competition, it is hoped that the new bonus structure will have an immediate effect in bringing old competitors and new competitors into the fold.

“At a given event we’re currently seeing six to eight competitors, often times different ones at each event,” continued Houghton.  “With the new structure, we hope to draw more of these competitors out at the same time.  Fifteen cars were constructed with no bonus program in place, it will be very interesting to see the effects of these new incentives.”

The bonus program is geared based on the number of drivers participating in an event.  As more drivers participate, more bonuses become available.  Many of the bonuses are designed to reflect the entertainment nature of the program.  The goal of this program is to increase the average field size in the final two events heading into the 2010 season.

Chaos Cars have proven to be a hit, especially with young children and families.  At the most recent Saturday event, Ultimate Chaos Car drivers were popular at a post-race autograph session on the spectator hill and rule books were a top request from the souvenir booth on the day.

An Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Car is currently valued between $300 and $2,000 depending on the quality of construction.  With an emphasis on safety and fun over performance the vehicles have proven to be relatively easy to build, maintain and repair, especially for teams without the budget to time commitment for an entry-level racing class.  Many teams also rotate driving duties between multiple drivers.

With the incentive program being announced, there is plenty of time for participants to prepare vehicles for participation before the next series of events.  In some cases vehicles have been prepared in just a few short days.  Putting a car in the program now would be a great step towards strong involvement in the 2010 season for the Ultimate Sandblasting and Coating Chaos Cars.

For more information on becoming a participant or forming a Chaos team contact John Houghton at the speedway office (519) 652-5068 Ext 201.

"If somone is serious about getting involved we have a number teams who have offered to help out with getting new teams on track," said Houghton.  "We also know where there are a handful of vehicles available for free or affordable use in competition.  Likewise, if anyone out there has a stock four-cylinder vehicle they would like to donate and see given a 'Chaos Makeover', they can contact us as well.  Watch the video series and find out how easy it is to build a safe and fun Ultimate Chaos Car."

The next event for the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos cars is the Saturday of the Great Canadian Race Weekend (September 5).  Gates open at 6:00 pm, racing starts at 8:00 pm.  The Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars will run at the conclusion of the race program.  Weekend passes for the Great Canadian Race weekend as well as single-day passes are available through the speedway website www.delawarespeedway.com.
