David Ostella, Star Mazda St. Petersburg Preview

Having had just a matter of days to pack up shop at Sebring International Raceway and slide across the state of Florida to St. Petersburg, Canadian David Ostella and his AIM Autosport team swing back into action this weekend with the second round of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear. A new venue for the series, all drivers will be on completely equal footing beginning at square one on Friday.

“We’ve never been here before but I love street circuits so I’m looking forward to the weekend,” Ostella said between rounds this week. “I’m still a little disappointed with how the race went at Sebring, but it’s behind me now and I’m fully focussed on St. Pete. I’m already looking forward to walking the track and getting things underway.”

When the weekend does kick off, it will do so in a very big way as for the first time in history, all levels of the Indy Racing League’s Road to Indy Program will be together. Along with the Star Mazda Championship, fans will have open-wheel talent from USF2000, Indy Lights, and the IZOD IndyCar Series on track. It means a standard race weekend for the Star Mazda drivers, as after a morning and afternoon session on Friday, a single qualifying session will come Saturday before Round 2 on Sunday.

“It’s going to be crazy with the Indy and F2000 drivers there as well, a lot of great racing,” said Ostella. “We’ll really have to focus our efforts with just three sessions before the race, but it’s the same for everyone, and I’ll do everything I can to make sure we’re ready come Sunday. I’m sure the engineers already have some ideas, and we’ll make the most of the Friday runs, for sure.”

With his recovery run to P13 at Sebring, Ostella holds the same spot in the championship with 23 points but will be looking for many more at St. Petersburg. After qualifying fifth and moving forward early in Round 1, the remainder of the race proved a disappointment for the eighteen-year-old and has him charged to make amends. He will race once again with support from Global Precast Intercontinental, Alpinestars, and RAW Integrated Ltd.
