OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY: SEASON OPENER, TAKE TWO
By Tommy Goudge (May 19, 2010) – Mother Nature decided to give Ohsweken Speedway’s race teams and fans an extra week to get ready for the 2010 season, but now the sky has cleared and it’s time to go racing! Ohsweken’s fifteenth anniversary season kicks off this Friday night when RapStar Energy Drink presents Friday Night Thunder featuring the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers, plus the first of three visits by the Mod Lite Stars Championship Tour North!
The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars are once again the headline division for Friday Night Thunder in 2010, and 2009 Corr/Pak Champ Tom Huppunen enters the season as the driver to beat. Veterans Kevin Job, Keith Dempster, Glenn Styres, Mikey Kruchka, and Jamie Collard are just a few of the challengers for the title this season, while former Ohsweken feature winner Mike Ling returns to dirt after a decade of pavement racing. The Rookie of the Year award is sure to be fiercely contested as an even half dozen first year drivers are signed up, including Jamie Turner, Chris Steele, Stevin Goldner, Shane Butler, Todd Hoddick, and 2009 Ohsweken Speedway ESSO Mini Stock champion Mitchell Brown
The always competitive ESSO Thunder Stocks division featured the closest points chase of any Friday Night Thunder division last season, and the same could happen this year. Defending champ Shayne Pierce will be back this season, this time in his family owned car. Meanwhile, other top ten drivers such as Billy Bleich, Jamie Cox, Jeremy Bean, Mike Thorne, Brad Herron, Ryan Dinning, Rob Disher, Lee Winger, and Chris Dickie would all like to take their first Thunder Stock title.
The ESSO Mini Stock division won't feature a repeat champion in 2010, as '09 champ Mitchell Brown has moved to the Corr/Pak Sprints. Former champions Abel Castelein (2007, 2008), Rick Emberson (2005), Kelly Hallett (2000, 2001) and Mike Giberson (1996) will try to add to their totals, while Dave Goodacre, Dan Stewart, Rob Slater, Ethan Martin, and Mike Evers are sure to compete for feature wins as well. Five first year drivers are also signed up to compete for the Rookie of the Year award, including Jacob Brown in the #10 seat vacated by brother Mitchell, along with Ryan Beagle, Brittani Myers, Jamie Goudge, and Robin Elliott.
The driver to beat in the Bomber division is Karl Sault, who claimed his first championship in 2009. The always unpredictable Bombers are also likely to include Jesse McDonald, Kacey Huffman, new driver Rob Twitchett, and a host of others having fun in the very affordable division.
Before Friday's action takes the green flag, Thursday night features Test and Tune for all divisions competing at the Speedway in 2010. The Test and Tune session offers a sneak peek at the 2010 season, and the best part? It's free for fans to observe from the main grandstand!
Ohsweken Speedway's Friday Night Thunder kicks off this Friday, May 21 when RapStar Energy Drink presents the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Bombers, plus the Mod Lite Stars Championship Tour North.

TESTING COMPLETE, KENNINGTON IS READY TO RACE!
May 19, 2010. Driver of the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractor Dodge put his brand new race car through and afternoon of testing at Delaware Speedway near
Kennington and his Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge are always among the front runners at each NASCAR Canadian Tire Series event and have high expectations for the 2010 season. With that in mind they had a few specific goals for their final tune up session at Delaware Speedway. “We wanted to make sure everything we expected from the new car proved to be true” said Kennington. “After some initial laps to ensure that everything was working properly I started to really get on it a bit and we were thrilled with the results” he added.
Without any official timing and scoring results the new Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractor Dodge was clearly the car that was putting down very fast, very consistent lap times that got everyone’s attention. “The whole team did a lot of work to get this new car ready and if this is how well the car is going to run this year we’ll be very happy” said the driver. “The car felt great, we only made some minor handling adjustments and it was consistently quick” added Kenington.
The plan now is to make final preparations to the car for the season opening event on Saturday June 5th at Delaware Speedway. Kennington was the winner of this event last season and also claimed victory at the season ending race at Kawartha Speedway. “We won a couple races last year, and had a very good season finishing second overall, but we’re even more focused on that Championship trophy this season” said Kennington discussing the year ahead. “This test was really successful and gives us a nice boost heading into the season opener” he added.
The 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season consists of thirteen events from coast to coast beginning Saturday June 5th at Delaware Speedway near

BSRKC Double Header at Kawartha

The Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship will present its first 2-cycle event of the 2010 season this Sunday, May 23 and Monday, May 24 at Kawartha Speedway. This event will be the first to be run in the new double header format that will be used for most of the 2-cycle events in 2010. This new format allows the series to offer an eight race championship while minimizing the number of weekends involved.
The 2-cycle classes will be joined by the 4-cycle Honda Junior Medium class, as will be the case for the entire 2010 season. Among the 2-cycle classes are Rotax Mini Max, Rotax Junior, Rotax Senior, Rotax DD2 and ICC/MOTO. The BSRKC series is an official qualifying series for the Canadian Rotax Max National Championships, which in turn allow the Canadian Champions in the Rotax Junior, Rotax Senior and Rotax DD2 classes to compete in the Rotax World Championships. The majority of Team Canada from the 2009 Rotax World Championships are expected to be racing at this weekend's event.
At this year's opening BSRKC 4-cycle event at 3-S Go Karts in Sutton, several drivers moving up to new classes made an immediate impact, none more than Cory Cacciavillani, who swept the Senior Lite and Senior Heavy classes after moving up from Junior in 2009. All eyes will be on Cacciavillani to see whether he can duplicate that success at Kawartha in Rotax Senior. Cacciavillani will be facing a stacked field that is likely to include 2009 BSRKC champion Lorenzo Mandarino as well as other standouts such as Michael Glaze, Pearce Herder, Jon Treadwell and Michael Vincec.
The top three drivers from Rotax Mini Max in 2009 are slated to move up to Rotax Junior this year. Grant Quinlan, Nicholas Ledson and Trevor Rancier all ran up front as new entrants in Junior Heavy last weekend, with Quinlan eventually taking the checkers. In Rotax Junior, they will face off against 2009 Canadian and BSRKC Champion Garett Grist as well as established racers like Spencer Todd, Cameron Morrison, Austin Milwain and Michael Taibi. The racing is always intense in Rotax Junior, and this race can be expected to deliver fireworks.
Tyler Ripani will lead a group of graduates from Rotax Micro Max and Novice TaG into the Rotax Mini Max class, where he will do battle with the likes of Gregory Hovesen, Dean Reilly, Zachary Shearer and Ryan Mohan. Another driver to watch will be 2008 BSRKC Novice Champion Ayrton Drosi, who is expected to return after an abbreviated 2009 campaign.
The growing Rotax DD2 class should see Darren White attempt to defend his 2009 BSRKC title against Brendon Bain, Frank Launi, Matt France, Enrico Menotti, and a host of others.
Will Zach Meyer make it two ICC/Moto championships in a row, or will another driver such as Josh Adams, Ryan Horses, Max Gamble, Stefan Jeffrey, Joe DeMarco, Addison Rayner, Jamie Riberdy or Michael Vincec dethrone him?
Junior Medium should feature the best from the Junior Lite and Junior Heavy classes. 2009 Champion Scotty Nagel is likely to feel plenty of heat from Jessica Brutzki, Tristan Gill, Nicholas Ledson, Julius Makos, Sean McPhee, Trevor Rancier, Jaret Stewart, Clay Van Eerd, Madysen Wright and many other capable drivers.
With multiple transitions between the wide open sections of the stock car oval and the tighter infield portion of the track, Kawartha Speedway poses some unique challenges for the tuners as well as the drivers, and it will take solid teamwork to deliver a victory this weekend.
The event is generously sponsored by Kawartha Speedway with trophies, cash and draw prizes. Full event details including the schedule, entry form, accommodations and pre-tech forms are available at www.BSRKC.com on the 2010 Schedule page.
The gate to the track will open at 6:00 am. Please use the entrance located near the green barn that enters over the harness race track. Registration opens at 7:00 am on both days. Sunday’s practice runs from 9:00 am until 11:45 am and is followed by the Drivers' Briefing at 12:00 pm. Monday’s Drivers’ Briefing is at 8:45 am with the karts on the track at 9:00 am. The entry fee is $85.00 per class, and tires will be available at the track from your favourite supplier.
BSRKC continues to offer top quality competition at the lowest possible cost, and invites drivers, teams and spectators alike to Kawartha Speedway to take in what promises to be a hotly contested event.
The Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship Series and its Principals, Organizers, Volunteers and Sponsors are committed to presenting the most professional regional karting Series in North America at an affordable cost. The BSRKC Series is dedicated to providing an environment of sportsmanship and camaraderie while furthering the development of kart racers of all ages and competitive levels. The BSRKC Series also intends to advance its racers into the higher echelons of motorsports through the Series’ namesake and Indy Racing League® Firestone Indy Lights™ Team Founder, Brian Stewart and Brian Stewart Racing.

Danny O'Brien Update
Courtesy Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design (Rick Young Photo)
After a two-week hiatus, Danny O’Brien was back on track this weekend, set to defend his title at Brockville Ontario Speedway track championship. Danny also made the trip to the Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday for their season opening twin 25 lap features. Danny will race at Cornwall weekly during the 2010 season.
Saturday night was the Brockville Ontario Speedway season opener, and after winning the last four track championships, O’Brien was certainly a favorite to win the opening night feature. O’Brien worked his way to the front of the pack and up as high as second before the front end broke on Danny’s Global Warranty, 1000 Islands RV, Pat’s Radiator, 103.7 BOB FM, Jackson’s Landscaping & Property Maintenance, Murdock’s Cement Finishing, Stover Bus Lines, Kendrick Racing team prepared Bicknell car.
“We are not off to a good start. We have had two races and have yet to finish”, says O’Brien. “That is racing though, and we will go on to Cornwall tomorrow night, and hope for some better luck”.
Sunday afternoon, the O’Brien team made their way to the Cornwall Motor Speedway for their annual season opening twin 25 lap feature events. In the first feature, O’Brien finished in 12th place.
“We have some work to do before the second feature”, claims Danny O’Brien. “The car didn’t handle very good at all”. We will start up near the front in the next feature, and hopefully we can get the car working better. The track is very slick, and we are just not able to get much side bite off the corners”.
Danny started the second feature from the third position, after the lead lap cars from the first race were inverted. When the checkered flag flew 25 laps later, O’Brien scored his first top five finish of the season, as he crossed the line in fourth.
“It was a little better this time. The track position helped us a lot, but there still was hardly any grip left out on the track at all. It was very slick. Hopefully next weekend will be better”, says O’Brien.
Danny O’Brien and his Global Warranty Kendrick Racing team will be busy weekend this coming weekend, as Danny will be back in action at Brockville on Saturday, then a 100 lap race at Cornwall on Sunday before making a Victoria Day visit to the Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ontario for the first round of the 2010 Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series. Matt Billings Update
Courtesy Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design (Rick Young Photo)
For anyone that knows Matt Billings, it was just a matter of time before he posted his first win in the 358 Modified division. The Brockville, Ontario racer won early and often in Go Karts, won in his first year in a Sportsman and after moving up to the competitive 358 Modified division, Billings was already knocking on the door for his first career win with a 2nd place finish on opening night at Can Am Motorsports Park.
When the Billings team arrived at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park on Friday evening, they were feeling confident. After some discussion early in the week on how to build on their early season success, and get up to that next level, Billings used the outside of the track and demonstrated that his Small Block Modified can compete against his more powerful Big Block counterparts.
When the green flag dropped Billings drove his Billings Automotive, Stealth Racewear, Race 101, Turn One High Performance Steering Systems, Pastime Motors, Babe Design, Finish Line Web Design, Carquest and Engine Research sponsored Bicknell car to the front, passing cars at ease, including opening night Big Block winner Rob Bellinger with a heroic last lap pass. While Billings crossed the finish line in 3rd place, he was easily the highest finishing Small Block racer, sending Billings and team to Victory Lane for their efforts, in just his third start.
“This is awesome”, says an excited Billings after the race. “We worked hard over the week to figure out what we need to do get better here at Can Am, and now we have a win to show for it. I love coming here, this is one of my favorite tracks to race at”.
On Saturday night, the Billings team loaded up their 2009 Bicknell car and headed just a few minutes up the highway to the Brockville Ontario Speedway. It was opening night at the BOS, and it was also Matt’s 17th Birthday. Tough track conditions made the track tough to navigate, but Billings brought the car home with a solid top10 finish, crossing the line in 7th place.
“The track was really rough tonight, it was hard to make up any ground. It was a good night overall, and now we will start thinking about tomorrow’s race at Cornwall”, says Billings after the 30 lap feature.
On Sunday, the Billings team worked on their car, going over the car, after the beating it took on the rough racetrack on the previous night. While Matt has had only two previous starts at Cornwall in the past, both with the Sportsman division and both ending with disappointing results, Matt remained confident during his first visit with the 358 Modified.
In the first feature, Billings started from the 4th position and quickly used the outside to take the lead. Billings held the lead through lap 9, when he was passed while fighting lapped traffic. Billings inched closer and closer to the leader, trying to regain his position, and on the final corner of the final lap, Billings ducked low, and made a dramatic pass for the win.
“What a race. I had to go low there early in the race, and we lost the lead, but we got it back at the end. I really have to thank everyone for helping. We have some great sponsors, and we have a great team. Thank you to everyone who comes to the track and supports us”, says Billings.
When not at the track, or working on his racecar, Billings is attending online webinars for the Race 101 program that he is enrolled in. Billings will head to North Carolina in July, and make his first attempt ever on pavement, running some practice laps at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Next weekend, Billings will head back to Can Am on Friday night, Brockville on Saturday, and Merrittville Speedway on Monday for the first race on the Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series schedule. RSR Trans-Am Pre-Race Report: Mosport
Courtesy Heather Haupt
Fresh off victory in New Jersey, RSR heads north of the border this weekend to Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada for Round 2 of the 2010 SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series at Mosport International Raceway.
Reigning Trans-Am series' champion Tomy Drissi remains on top of the series' standings after taking the win during the 2010 Trans-Am season opener at New Jersey Motorsports Park two weeks ago. The Hollywood, California-native looks to return to victory circle this weekend and earn his first win at Mosport after finishing as the runner up last season. In six starts on the 2.459-mile circuit, Drissi earned a front row grid position in 2003 and finished on the podium twice (2000 - 3rd; 2009 - 2nd). Drissi will drive the #5 THE A-TEAM: THERE IS NO PLAN B Jaguar XKR promoting 20th Century Fox's new movie out in theaters June 11.
"I am very excited about going back to Mosport and always excited to go racing in Canada because the fans are amazing," said Drissi. "Mosport is a wicked track, you can be really fast there but you have to be very careful - no mistakes. We are just going to try to continue our momentum from the last race at New Jersey. I know there are going to be a couple of guys really gunning for me so we are going to have to be fast and reliable and hopefully we can do well there."
Also coming off a successful start to the 2010 Trans-Am season is Daniel Ramoutarsingh who drove his #8 Trinrico Steel & Wire Products Jaguar XKR to a fourth-place finish in New Jersey. The 2009 Rookie-of-the-Year felt the car had what it took to finish on the podium in the first race of the season but time was just not on his side. Last year was the Trinidadian's first race at Mosport International Raceway which saw him qualify eighth on the grid and finish tenth overall.
"I am looking forward to attending the second installment of Trans-am at Mosport," Ramoutarsingh commented. "Last year was a challenging weekend that resulted in a lesser finishing position than deserved. This year I am seeking redemption."
The 2010 SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series competition gets underway this weekend in New Jersey, May 7-9, with qualifying and the race taking the green flag on Sunday. For more information go to the series' website at www.sccatrans-am.com. A race recap will be available in the Trans-Am section on www.RSRJaguar.com following the event. More information on the team and Trans-Am drivers will also be available online.
ABOUT RSR
In the spring of 2009, Paul Gentilozzi and his sons, Tony and John, founded RSR with the support of Jaguar Cars Ltd. Gentilozzi, a five-time Trans-Am Champion and record holder in virtually all categories of the Trans-Am history book, continues to have the support of a dedicated staff of championship winning employees who to date have recorded 59 poles, 144 podium finishes, 62 victories, 8 Drivers' Championships and 8 Manufacturers' Championships in Trans-Am competition under the helm of Gentilozzi. 2010 brings the return of Tomy Drissi, 2009 Trans-Am Champion, and Daniel Ramoutarsingh, 2009 Rookie-of-the-Year, competing in Jaguar XKR's for the second consecutive year with Gentilozzi's squad.
Canadian Ken Wilden enters Mosport's Trans-Am Race
BOWMANVILLE, ON - Canadian Ken Wilden has signed with Derhaag Motorsports to run a Chevrolet Corvette in Sunday's SCCA Trans-Am race at Mosport, part of the Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend, May 21-23.
Wilden, who’s the defending GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season champion, is reuniting with team owner Jim Derhaag nine years after the two celebrated their first Trans-Am Series win together at Laguna Seca.
"It's great to be back with Jim and to be racing in the SCCA Trans-Am series once again," said the Oakville, ON native. "Although it's been awhile since I’ve been behind the wheel of one of these high-horsepower brutes, Derhaag Motorsports is one of the best in the business. I love racing at Mosport and believe we can enjoy a successful weekend, like we’ve done together in the past.”
Simon Gregg of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL will pilot a second Derhaag Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette.
Wilden has been recognized as one of the country’s most accomplished road racers since claiming the Player’s/GM and Firehawk Series crowns in 1992. Along with Trans-Am, his racing resume includes Formula Atlantic and Daytona Prototypes.
Racing starts Friday with a full-day of testing for all four championships on the weekend schedule. Saturday is a mix of practice and qualifying in the morning, followed by races for the Castrol Touring cars, World Challenge and the Sundown Grand Prix. Sunday morning opens with more qualifying and then races in World Challenge, Castrol Touring and Trans-Am to close out the weekend.

Mosport Speedway set for season opener on Saturday
BOWMANVILLE, ON - As Mosport International Raceway kicks off its 50th anniversary season with the Victoria Day SpeedFest, Mosport Speedway will also begin its exciting racing action this Saturday.
The 21st year of racing at the half-mile oval revs into high gear with the three regular home classes - the Thorsons EVT Six Cylinder or Less, Bob's Towing Sportsman and the R.P. Oil Ltd. Late Model thundering around the track.
In 2009, Dan "Spiderman" Kimmerly of Courtice, Ont., won his first Mosport Late Model title after several years of knocking on the championships door. Kimmerly won three feature races in his #01 Dom's Auto Parts Pontiac Grand Prix. After finally achieving what he long strived for, "Spiderman" will now focus most of his attention on his daughter Shannon's progress, who finished 6th in points last season. He hopes to run in as many races as he can but he may not be successful in defending his crown with a limited schedule.
Last season's R.P. Oil Ltd. Modifieds winner Jim "the Professor" Rossiter of Orono, Ont. will make the jump to the Late Model Ranks. In 2009, Jim was perfect, scoring an unbelievable 25 race wins in 25 starts, never missing a single lap. With three consecutive Modified championships, Rossiter should be an early season favourite to make a successful leap and win the Late Model Championship.
In the Bob's Towing Sportsman division, Oshawa, Ont. Bill Northam returns to defend his title. Northam earned a lifetime reward after two decades of racing at Mosport Speedway as he drove his #85 Five Points Mall Monte Carlo to three feature wins and six heat race victories to edge out long-time rival Terry Shaw by 21 points to secure the crown.
One of Mosport's most popular divisions, the Thorsons EVT Six or Less division will continue to see great competition week in and week out. In 2009, almost 30 drivers scored points over the course of the season. Series veteran Kevin Hinds went home with the most hardware, with four feature victories but after missing a few weekends, he fell out of contention for the series title. Bowmanville, Ont. own Jeff Scott emerged at the top of the leader board by seasons end. In all, Scott recorded 10 victories and won the title by 33 points.
Virtually every Saturday will include special travelling tours events besides the home series races. Beginning on May 29, there will be a special for nine straight weeks including OSCAAR, Lucas Sportsman Cup, Modifieds and Ontario Legend.
Each week will see the return of the Old Dutch Snacks "King of the Hill" spectator races, where two cars go head-to-head with the winning driver moving on and the loser parking it for the night.
The highlight of Mosport Speedway's season will undoubtedly be the Dickies 200 featuring the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series on August 21. It's stock car racing at its best - always fast and unpredictable and not to be missed. There will also be two Fan Appreciation nights starting with the first on July 3 and the second being on the final weekend of the season, September 11.
Gates open at 5:30 pm this Saturday with the races starting at 6:30 pm. Admission for adults is $13, youth $8 and as always, children 12 and under is free. Admission for the Speedway this Saturday is included with the Victoria Day SpeedFest Super Ticket.
For more information and to purchase tickets call the Mosport Hotline at 1-800-866-1072 (Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm ET), visit online at www.mosport.com, or email info@mosport.com . For further information: Ryan Chalmers, Mosport ryan@mosport.com.

KARTS: Innisfil Indy has been repaved
INNISFIL, ON - It has been almost two weeks since the Innisfil Indy track (south of Barrie, ON) was repaved. The track is now open for practice. The track looks awesome it has been widened in a few spots and is as smooth as glass. The grid area has been repaved and painted and even the from entrance has been repaved.
This past weekend, the track opened for practice and there were lots of karters who took to the track to test their setups. Everyone had nothing but praise for what the Launi family has done with track and the whole facility.
We urge all IKC members to get out and make some laps so they can work on their kart setup as track has a lot of grip and no bumps. Any racers who are planning to run any of our specials or club races or the Brian Stewart Series should make plans to get a feel for the new surface.
IKC race 4 and 5 is still 2 weeks away but we are very excited to get back on track for this double header weekend.

Biosign announces technical partnership with AIM Autosport
TORONTO, ONTARIO, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 – Biosign Technologies Inc. (CNSX:BIO) (“Biosign” or the “Company”) and AIM Autosport (“AIM”) announced today a multi-year technical partnership for enhancing driver performance and safety in the motor sport industry.
Modern racing demands top conditioning of car and driver. Fine tuning the vehicle involves advanced test and diagnostic technologies.
Under this agreement, Biosign will address the other side of the equation – fine tuning the driver’s health.
Fine tuning a driver’s response to stress requires precise observation and detailed analysis of key physiological variables such as blood pressure, heart rate, and blood glucose. Measuring and analyzing these variables in people exposed to significant g forces and temperatures exceeding 100F provides unique opportunities for improving and expanding Biosign’s health monitoring services to include diet, endurance, heat, and exhaustion management.
“In the years AIM has been racing, driver performance has always been a key issue in our success on the race track”, commented AIM’s Team Principal Ian Willis. “Once we entered the field of endurance racing, we had to take note of the many parameters that can affect the driver’s performance under adverse conditions including heat, dehydration, physical stress and fatigue. We have a number of systems in place to address those issues but our partnership with Biosign will allow AIM to enhance the driver’s condition before, during and following on-track sessions. With Biosign, we now have the monitoring abilities and backup data to provide us a better understanding of the stress experienced by our drivers, which will help us compete against some of the best race drivers in the world.”
Biosign’s UFIT health monitoring system will be used initially to address fitness and health evaluation issues. Radu Leca, Biosign’s president, noted: "The focus on preventing injuries and ill health in sports will boost our profile in this very important area of health care. We are delighted that AIM chose us to test, validate, and provide advanced health monitoring services, using the experience and solutions we already have in this arena.”
Under the partnership, AIM will be marketing and creating brand awareness for Biosign in one of the fastest growing sports in America. Biosign branding will be prominent on the AIM No. 61 Ford Riley as it competes in the “GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16”. The first race featuring the Biosign branding is scheduled for May 31st, 2010 at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut and can be seen on SPEED TV live at 2:00pm (ET).

At last my daily work schedule combined with Mother Nature to give me a perfect weekend of racing. A nice 6-00pm finish from my Cornwall (Ont) work base on Friday allowed me to make the quick dash across the Seaway Bridge to Hogansburg (NY) and the Mohawk International Raceway.
The season opener which I missed the previous week had to be cut short late because of rain and the second of the twin Modified features had to be postponed. This meant there were two big races for me tonight. In the first one, my friend and veteran racer Laurent Ladouceur of Alexandria (Ont) did a wild flip between turn three and four which brought red flag conditions. Laurent walked away from the wreck all OK, and was soon in the pits unloading his back up car for the next race.
Once restarted, Dan Jalbert charged away unchallenged to take the checkers. Most of the second Modified feature was led by Dale Planck until team mate and car owner Carey Terrance blasted past him to victory. In the other major divisions, Louie Jackson won the Pro Stocks and Chris Raabe the SPORTSMAN.
I'd been looking forward to the next two days on my agenda which were the season openers at the Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday and the Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday.
It was a little bit overcast on Saturday, but it was dry and things looked good. On my arrival there were plenty of cars waiting to fill the pits and as start time got nearer the grandstands became full of eager fans. I did my customary walk around the pits and chatted to many of my friends. Apologies if I miss anyone , but here's a few I recall. From the Sportsman ranks , there was Ralph and Tabatha Murphy (66) . 'Tabs' is one of the prettier faces you'll see around the pits and I'm always ready with my camera when a photo opportunity arises !
I then moved along and chatted to another Sportsman driver, Steve Barber (80). I have to say a big thanks to Steve, who is now the third driver to add the www.rickattheraces.com logo to his car. The others are, the aforementioned Tabatha and my friend Billy the 'Mohawk Express' Cook (M70) . It's a real nice gesture of you guys, and it really makes me feel good when I see what you have done.
The next person I spoke to was Modified Veteran Dave Heaslip (1). A couple of years ago he bought a car from the Parts Peddler Show in New York which he has now raced for the past two seasons. For some reason this car never 'delivered the goods' and these must have been Dave's least successful years. When I saw the black 'Parts Peddler' signed car in the pits, I thought the worst ! and he must be having another try at getting it sorted, but I was wrong. He told me he is now using an old car from a few years back which he won the MIR (formerly Frogtown Speedway) championship with and only the body panels are from the ill fated Peddler Car.
It definitely went better and I won't be surprised to see the 'Slip' back in Victory Lane this year. Dave who is in his sixties also told me that this would be his final year of racing. My reply to that was 'Yeah, right ! Dave , I bet we will be having this same conversation next year '
I also chatted to another good friend of mine, Stephane Lafrance. 'Steph' is always willing to try out new ideas and after racing only part time in 2009 is back with a vengeance this year with a brand new creation. He was was having cooling problems and explained to me what he was doing to cure it. As for the man himself, he was sounding pretty bad and an was suffering the same Flu like symptoms that I've had for the past week. Lucky for 'Steph' I had some 'Fisherman Friends' in my pocket !
In the Modified feature we were all treated to a great race between Cornwall's Gage Morin (16) and Kingston's Tim O'Brien (88). As they went into the last lap it looked like O'Brien had the edge, but some how Morin found a way past while negotiating lapped traffic so took the flag.
The SPORTSMAN feature was another run away victory for Chris Raabe (01).
After the overcast skies at Brockville, the sun was out for Cornwall . An earlier start time ( 6-00pm) and the addition of SPORTSMAN to this years schedule will be an interesting change to what we have become accustomed to. As a staff member I usually arrive at 3-00pm but decided that because this was the opener I would get there even earlier.
As well as the new SPORTSMAN division there was an extra Modified feature too. The first of the 25 lappers was won young Matt Billings (74) of Brockville who has recently moved up from SPORTSMAN. He made history at last October's SUPER DIRT WEEK when he won that divisions biggest race on the 'Moody Mile' at Syracuse. The Cornwall win came in very similar circumstances to Gage Morins win the night before.
After a race long duel with Tim O'Brien, lapped cars once more became the deciding factor. As the two of them raced to the flag, back markers came between. As the starter got ready to drop the checkers a big wreck took place, Billings passed the finish line first but O'Brien went over it backwards to claim second. Exciting stuff!
The second Modified feature was also exciting, but for different reasons. It all looked like Laurent Ladouceur had got it in the bag, but Kayle Robidoux (43) had other ideas. In the last few laps he powered his way through the field and after passing Danny O'Brien (7*) and Eric Gauvreau (22) he was soon on Ladouceurs back bumper. It didn't take him too long to get past and when the checkers fell it was the St Constant , Quebec man who claimed the honors.
The PRO STOCK feature was another victory for Joey Ladouceur, but the driver that impressed me most was Corey Wheeler (47) who showed he's got great potential and better things to come.
Most people ( me included) expected the SPORTSMAN feature to be Chris Raabe's third win , in as many nights, but once again it was lapped cars that changed the result. Raabe had a commanding lead, but instead easing off, and taking it cautiously he chose to press on and keep the hammer down. While passing a couple of less experienced drivers, metal hit metal and the inevitable happened. A big wreck occurred and the chance of a hat rick were gone. Long Time trier Chris Herbison (63) was there to take the Victory. He told me afterwards he'd been trying for a Cornwall feature win for 14 years.
Scotia Speedworld’s Weekly Racing Series Opens Season This Sunday!
The Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Cars will be the first division to take the green flag this season. Last year competition was strong in this young developmental division. Brad Eddy of Sackville took home last year’s crown with DJ Casey just 4 markers off, followed by Dylan Blenkhorn of Truro. Blenkhorn and Casey are expected to return to the division, while ’09 champ Brad Eddy is competing down South in NASCAR’s Late Model Division.
Next up on the season opener docket is the Legends Division. The Legends are 5/8-scale replicas of the '34 and '37 Chevrolet and Ford (coupes and sedans) models that produce some fierce racing when the green flag is thrown. The Legend Division has quickly grown to be a crowd favourite and the car count continues to grow, last year 33 legend drivers saw action at Scotia Speedworld.
Fans will be also treated to Sportsman racing. The Sportsmen are the premier division of the Weekly Racing Series. Sportsman cars are full bodied stock cars built from the ground up and made for racing at tracks throughout North America. Last season Terry Roma tied Jeff Dillman in overall points. In the event of a tie, the team with the most wins takes home the crown and as Roma and team were winless in ’09 while Dillman had two wins which gave him the championship. Another intense battle awaits those vying for the prestigious title in 2010.
The brand new Truck division is next to hit the track on Sunday. This will be the first full season of racing for the ¼ tons. Last season the trucks shared the track with the now defunct Hobby Stock Class. 8 trucks have pre-registered for 2010 with more expected to join as the season develops. These ¼ ton trucks are equipped with a four-point roll cage and powered by V8 motors.
The Tirecraft Thunder and Lightning Cars will close the action at Scotia Speedworld on Sunday. Last year both divisions had incredible car counts. The Lightning division had twenty-eight cars compete in '09, with the top five competitors within 100-points of each other at season’s end. The Thunder division had the highest car count of any division with 47 cars taking a green flag over the course of the season.
Admission for the Weekly Racing Series season opener is just $20 per carload for grandstand seating. This offer is not open to the pits. For single admission: $12.00 for adults; $2.00 for youth aged 8-15; children 7 and under are admitted free. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Pit admission is $15.00 and restricted to those 16 and older. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. Porsche Joins GRAND-AM As Official Promotional Partner
Courtesy Sean Nesbitt // NASCAR
Porsche, one of the most successful manufacturers in GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 history - and in all of sports car racing - has become the newest "Official Promotional Partner" of GRAND-AM, joining the growing list of manufacturers participating in the program.
Porsche now has the right to use GRAND-AM marks, logos, images and videos throughout the 2010 season. The program allows all Porsche drivers in the Rolex Series GT class to be eligible for the prestigious Porsche Cup, which has been awarded by the manufacturer to the top privateer Porsche driver on an annual basis since 1970.
Porsche has won nine Rolex Series manufacturer championships, more than any other manufacturer. It captured manufacturer titles in five different Rolex Series classes, including Daytona Prototype in 2003. The German manufacturer earned its 22nd overall victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona in January.
Porsche is the winningest manufacturer in Rolex Series history, having claimed its 58th class victory last month in the Bosch Engineering 250 when Ted Ballou and Andy Lally co-drove TRG's No. 66 AXA Porsche GT3 at Virginia International Raceway. The manufacturer is also the winningest - both in overall and class victories - in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge history, with 42 overall and 59 class wins in the series.
"The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series is a very important component of our motorsports effort in the United States," said Paul Ritchie, president of Porsche Motorsport North America.
"Both our 911 race cars and Porsche-powered Daytona Prototypes have found success in the series, and we are very pleased to add this increased marketing component to add to the technical support we already provide our customers."
The Porsche Cup - with a multiple prize fund of more than euro250,000 ($310,000) - is one of the most coveted awards of any manufacturer. These awards are presented at the annual Porsche Cup party in Weissach, Germany. Since GRAND-AM's inception in 2000, three full-time Rolex Series competitors have earned the Porsche Cup: Kevin Buckler in 2002, Wolf Henzler in 2006 and Dirk Werner in 2009.
Buckler owns and operates TRG, the most successful GT team in Rolex Series history, which celebrated its 26th class victory last month at VIR. Buckler earned the Porsche Cup as a driver in 2002, when he took the GT-class victory in both the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and finished second in the Rolex Series GT championship.
Henzler's 2006 season included four Rolex Series GT victories and a second-place performance in the championship standings with Tafel Racing. Werner, meanwhile, co-drove a Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche to four Rolex Series GT class victories and the 2009 championship with Leh Keen. Werner also won the 2007 Rolex GT title. Buckler, Henzler and Werner joined sports car legends such as John Fitzpatrick, Bob Wollek, Bernd Schneider and Klaus Ludwig as winners of the prestigious award.
"Drivers who have won the Porsche Cup will tell you that it is one of their most meaningful and cherished accomplishments," said Kevin Hindson, GRAND-AM Vice President, Marketing and Communications. "We've been fortunate to have three Rolex Series drivers win the Porsche Cup over the past decade against the very best Porsche privateers the world has to offer. To have all Porsche drivers in the GT class eligible for this award shows once again that the intense competition in the Rolex Series is recognized internationally."
AIM to run Phil Fogg Jr at Laguna
Chris Jameson // Level Ten Communications
The next round of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear takes place this coming weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and AIM Autosport will be on hand with series sophomore David Ostella plus series regular Phil Fogg Jr. who is competing in the Masters division.
Ostella and the team recently returned from testing in Indianapolis at O'Reilly Raceway Park (ORP) for the Memorial Day race taking place ahead of the Indy 500 as part of the Road to Indy Program. David finished seventh in the Global Precast No. 16 AIM Autosport Star Mazda at St. Petersburg and is ninth overall in the series championship.
Fogg Jr. has been a regular in the Star Mazda series since 2005 competing in select events each year in the Expert class for drivers 30-44 years of age. He would finish second in the class championship in 2007 and third in 2008. Phil, a native of Wilsonville, Oregon is joining AIM Autosport for the race at Laguna Seca plus another race later in the season.
"Being from the west coast, Phil has spent a lot of time racing at Laguna Seca", commented AIM Autopsort's Star Mazda team manager Keith Willis. "He has done well here in the past and we are confident he will have a strong run this weekend. We are planning on one more race with Phil this season, but we are not sure yet which event that will be."
Michael Furfari who runs in the Furfari Paving No. 13 AIM Autosport Star Mazda will not be running at Laguna Seca this weekend as the event conflicts with the grade eleven student's exam schedule. He will be back with the team following the end of the school year.
"As with any of the young drivers that have come through AIM's development program, we understand the need to put school first", noted Willis. "It is unfortunate that Michael will miss this race, especially as he is in the top ten in the championship, but we are sure he will make up points as the season goes on."
Willis continued, "Our goal for David this weekend is to improve on the results from St. Petersburg. He was quick in the test at ORP and he qualified well at the Laguna Seca race last year so we are going into the weekend on a good note. Our hope is to move up a few positions in the championship."
Testing begins on Thursday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca followed by two session on Friday. Qualifying takes place Saturday at 12:20 p.m. ET with the race on Sunday at 12:15 p.m. ET. Live timing will be available online at www.starmazda.com.
Jim Bray experiences NASCAR's new Hall of Fame in Charlotte
Note: In addition to being a former NASCAR racer and current NCATS team owner, Canadian Jim Bray is also a motorsports historian. He recently stopped in Charlotte, NC to check out the new NASCAR Hall of Fame and catch up with some old friends.
Story and photos by Jim Bray
Watching the Dover race on Sunday was great; but being in Charlotte last week was beyond anything. On Monday evening I stopped in the new NASCAR Hall of Fame building, and through some NASCAR people, I met a couple who have a huge collection of restored and reproduction race cars. They have a ‘63 Ford in the 'Glory Road' display, claimed to be driven by Fireball, and painted the purple with 22 on it like his car was in ‘63. I raced against this car in USAC in ‘63 when it was driven by Curtis Turner (painted red). It later became Wendell Scott’s NASCAR car.
These same people also have an ex-Bill Stroppe ‘63 Mercury that they bought from Curtis 'Crawfish' Crider. I phoned my friend Rex White, from the show, to verify that this was the car he got from Stroppe at Daytona in July ‘63 when he switched from Chevrolet to Mercury. It was.
The owners were ecstatic that I was able to give them this very welcome information. Rex said, "Let’s meet tomorrow." We did, and how great it was to be with one of my best friends, whom I met at the CNE in ‘57. Rex is the oldest living National 'Cup' Champion.
Because I was with Rex and his niece Kay, whom I hadn’t seen for about 40 years, I ended up in a private escorted tour of the Hall of Fame facilities, with a Hall of Fame official.
No matter what you hear, or see on TV, there is absolutely nothing that will give a full reflection of what these people have done in building the new NASCAR Hall of Fame. Having most of the living former National Champions on stage at the opening was great. Junior Johnson even seemed choked up. (I was at Junior’s farm for breakfast on Monday morning and he was being interviewed by two groups of media people - a very early time of day for them.). Joining the racing legends on stage were the Governor of North Carolina, the mayor of Charlotte, the ex-mayor, and the woman who represented (as she said) the most important part of the whole deal; the bank that loaned them the money!
When you are at the Hall, seeing what is on each floor, you would think "that’s it," but no! The next level gives you even more. From a replica ‘39 Ford Raymond Parks, Red Byron car, to a ‘48 car and most eras in between, to entry forms, pit equipment, pictures, trophies etc. etc. or anything else you might think of. Anyone who has any respect for the drivers, crews, owners and NASCAR needs to see this place.
I have been to a few Halls of Fame, and nothing comes even close to this. It took millions of dollars to build, part of which is being repaid by a local entertainment tax, but I cannot even imagine how wonderful this will be for the City, for the State and for NASCAR.
What really made my day (Rex’s too) was when Rick Hendrick spoke, he reminisced about going to Martinsville as a young person, getting Richard Petty’s autograph and seeing his favourite driver, Rex White, race. So I’m sure millions will do what I believe they should do, and make many trips to Charlotte and the Hall of Fame.
Wilkins returns to ALMS for Six Hour race at Laguna Seca this weekend
Chris Jameson // Level Ten Communications
Mark Wilkins of Toronto is returning to competition in the American Le Mans series this coming weekend joining Christophe Bouchut and Scott Tucker in the Level 5 Motorsports No. 55 FLM09 LMPC class. This will be Mark's first race in the car since the trio won the class at the 12 Hours of Sebring back in March. This weekend's event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca features a six hour race starting Saturday afternoon and running into the twilight.
As he did at Sebring, Mark will share the driving duties with Bouchut and Tucker with the hope of once again taking the top step of the podium.
"We had a great first outing with the car at Sebring scoring the class win", said Wilkins. "It was quite the experience, the car being so different from the Daytona Prototypes and that track is very tough on drivers. After helping the team come away with the victory I was hoping for another opportunity to drive the LMPC so it was a nice surprise when Level 5 called to ask if I would be available for the six hour race at Laguna Seca."
Wilkins continued, "Laguna is a track I know very well having raced there a number of times. The track is smooth and the No. 55 FLM09 Oreca should be very quick there. Knowing the track and having spent time in the car, I have a good comfort level going in and we should be up to speed very quickly. Scott and Christophe also have a lot of experience at Laguna so I do like our chances this weekend."
After two races the Level 5 Motorsports No. 55 is leading the championship while Bouchut and Tucker are in a four-way tie to lead the driver's championship. Mark sits third in the driver's championship just six points out of second place.
The American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patron is scheduled to begin at 2:30 am PT on Saturday, May 22nd. The race will be broadcast on CBS on May 29th (one week tape delay) starting at 1:30 pm ET.
