Cornwall, Ont Sunday, May 16, 2010 Martin Bélanger The Cornwall Motor Speedway had their opening night of the 2010 season with a quite a night of racing with 2 25-lap feature races in the modifieds, the new Sportsman category was seeing some action along with the other regular categories that are Pro-Stock, Semi-Pro and Mini-Stock. Nortrax was the official sponsor of the first night of the season.
In the first 25-lap modified feature race, Tim O'Brien took the early lead over Matt Billings and Kyle Dingwall when Carey Terrance stopped on the backstretch and the yellow came out on lap 1. On the restart, Billings used the outside lane to take the lead over O'Brien when 3 cars got tangle in turn 2 and caution came out with 2 laps in the books. Billings kept the lead with O'Brien in second and Eric Gauvreau in third with Michel Chicoine and Kayle Robidoux on this tail. Chicoine and Gauvreau went into battle for third as they ran side by side, Gauvreau pulled away from Chicoine while Tim O'Brien used the high lane to retake the lead over Billings on lap 9. The leaders got caught up in traffic as yellow came out for Tammy Jalbert on lap 14. O'Brien has a great start with Billings and Robidoux now in third. Billings got closer to O'Brien when they catched slower cars with 5 laps to go, Billings passed O'Brien in the final corner to win his first feature of his career over O'Brien and Kayle Robidoux completed the podium. Tim O'Brien, Kyle Dingwall and Michel Chicoine won the heat races.
Joey Ladouceur grabbed the lead over Ricky Thompson in the 20-lap Pro-Stock Feature race, Stéphane Lebrun was running third with Corey Wheeler on his right side , Wheeler takes third using the inside lane on the 6th lap. Ryan Stabler stopped in front of the grandstand and caution came out on lap 8. Ladouceur picked where he left off with Thompson and Wheeler behind him. Pair of 47s with Wheeler and Bissonnette was doing battles for third as they approached the end of the feature race, Steve Johnston stopped in the backstretch with 2 laps to go. Ladouceur led the pack with Thompson going too high and lot several spots while Ladouceur led the final lap to win the feature over Bissonnette and Wheeler completed the top 3.
A solid field of 18 sportsmans took the green flag in the 20-lap feature race, as Chris Herbison took the lead over Chris Raabe and Steve Bernier when yellow came out for Jenna David on the first lap. On the restart, Raabe took the lead using the outside lane. Raabe took himself a comfortable lead over the field with 5 laps down. Raabe got into lap traffic and was taking out by a slower car and the caution came out at the halfway point, Herbison is now back into the lead. Herbison kept the lead with Bernier in second and Randy Earl in third as the yellow was back out with 7 laps to go. Herbison has a strong start over Bernier as Earl got close to Bernier for second with Steve Barber waiting in fourth with 2 laps to go. Herbison led the final lap to win the feature with Earl passing Bernier on the final lap to finish second with Bernier completing the podium. Herbison had a perfect night winning his heat, Raabe and Earl won the others.
The second 25-lap feature race was next with Denis Gauvreau leading the first lap with Laurent Ladouceur taking the lead in lap 2 with Eric Gauvreau making a good move from the inside and taking second as Brian McDonald and Danny O'Brien were following him. McDonald went too high and O'Brien took third. The high lane seemed the place to be as the top 5 cars were running high. O'Brien was now on the backbumper of Gauvreau with 11 laps down. The leaders got into traffic as Carey Terrance got into the wall in the frontstretch with 13 laps in the books. Ladouceur got a good jump with Gauvreau still in second and McDonald regained third over O'Brien. Kayle Robidoux was coming on strong as he took fourth from O'Brien on lap 16. Robidoux took the third spot over McDonald with 6 laps to go and was now racing with Gauvreau for second, he used the same technique to pass Gauvreau and did the same to jump over Ladouceur for the lead on lap 22. Robidoux led the final laps to win his first feature of the season over Ladouceur, Gauvreau, O'Brien and McDonald completed the top 5.
In the Semi-Pro feature, Gaetan Amesse took the lead on the first lap when caution came out. Amesse leads two more laps when the yellow lights are back out. Amesse and Dubois went into a great battle when the green lights came back on with Derek Cryderman in third. Amesse and Dubois swapped the lead but Amesse got away as Dubois and Cryderman went into battle as the yellow was shown to the drivers as they got at the halfway point. Amesse retained the lead with Cryderman now in second and caution was back out with 6 laps to go. Dubois got a great jump from third and got the lead as Adam Delormier got to a stop in turn #2 and caution came out on lap 11. Dubois led the final laps to capture the win with Joe Woods finishing second and Amesse in third.
A field of 18 cars took the green in the 12-lap Mini-Stock feature with Guillaume Daoust taking the lead when caution came out with 3 laps in the books. Daoust and Marc Usereau were racing side by side on the green when caution came back out for Martin Bernard. Daoust got a good start with Corey Barnes taking second but caution came back on lap 7, he was moved 2 spots for rough riding on the leader. Daoust still the leader on the green with Andrew Giroux in second and Barnes in third. Giroux used the outside lane to take the lead on the final lap and won the feature race over Daoust and Barnes completed the podium. Alexandre Pilon, Martin Bernard and Frank Colpitts won the heats in the Mini-Stocks.
