Ohsweken Speedway set for season opener this Friday (May 15)

By Tommy Goudge (May 13, 2009) – More than seven long months have passed since Wayne Johnson won the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals, ending the inaugural season for the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division at Ohsweken Speedway.  This Friday, May 15, Corr/Pak is also the presenting sponsor for the fourteenth annual opening night at Ohsweken, featuring the Corr/Pak Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers!

The first season for the Corr/Pak Sprint Cars at Ohsweken was a successful one, with great racing and good car counts at each event.  Continued growth is expected in the division this season, with at least five drivers already registered to compete for the Rookie of the Year title this season, including Kevin Loveys, Wayne Ashton, Jim Huppunen, Travis Cunningham, and Jason Martin.  Joining those rookies are plenty of established drivers such as track champion Keith Dempster, ’08 rookie of the year Ryan Hunsinger, Kevin Job, Glenn Styres, Mikey Kruchka, Tom Huppunen, Dave Dykstra, and many more!

The ESSO Thunder Stocks division grew by leaps and bounds last season.  Large and competitive fields are expected again this season featuring the likes of Glen Leinen, Rob Disher, Mike Thorne, Chris Dickie, Mark Saul, Jamie Cox, Brad Herron, and a host of others.  One name no longer found in the division is that of 2008 track champion Cody McPherson, who has continued his climb up the racing ladder to the DIRT Sportsman tour.  Replacing him behind the wheel of the Mikey Granton-owned machine - this year re-numbered 88 - is Shayne Pierce who already has a feature win at Humberstone to his credit this season.

In ESSO Mini-Stock competition, Abel Castelein is once again the driver to beat.  Coming off his second consecutive track title, Castelein won’t lack for competition as he tries for an unprecedented third championship in a row, as drivers like Mitchell Brown, ’05 champ Rick Emberson, Mike Evers, Kevin Hilborn, the Hess team, and many more will try to knock him off the top of the heap.

Another new addition in 2008, the Fun Stocks return to Ohsweken with a new name this season.  Now known as the Bombers, the division continues to be an affordable and fun entry level option, with some surprises in store for fans and drivers alike.  Lee Hils became the first champion of the division last season and will return to defend his crown in 2009.
