Cornwall, Ont Sunday, May 24, 2009 Martin Bélanger The Cornwall Motor Speedway presented a complete race program along with the postponed Semi-Pro feature of last week on Paul`s Auto Body Night. Beautiful weather and a great car-count in every category were on hand.
Mitch Jock took the lead in the 30-lap modified feature but he got out of the track in turn 3 and yellow came out on lap 1 and Tim O'Brien was the new leader. On the restart, a 10-car tangled occurred on the front stretch and red was thrown on the track, a few drivers such as Gage Morin and Perry Francis had severe damage on the cars. Kyle Dingwall had a great start and took the lead over O'Brien with Robidoux in third and Eric Gauvreau in fourth.
Robidoux made a good move from the inside to take second on O'Brien on lap 6, Gauvreau used the same lane to pass O'Brien for third on lap 8 while Dingwall was running alone in front with 10 laps in the book. At the halfway point, Dingwall had a full stretch lead over the second spot of Robidoux. With only 5 to go, Dingwall stopped in turn 3 and lost his lead but was able to move back in third because of his great lead, Robidoux is now the new leader with Gauvreau in second.
When the race got back to green, Billy Cook got his car on the roof in turn one to bring the second red of the feature. On the restart, Robidoux was still first with Dingwall taking second on Gauvreau. Robidoux led the final laps and won his first feature of the season over Dingwall, Gauvreau, O'Brien and Laurent Ladouceur rounded out the top 5. Mitch Jock and Tim O'Brien were the winners in the qualifying races.
A fine field of 22 cars took the start in the 20-lap Pro-Stock feature as Corey Wheeler and George Renaud quickly got into battle for the lead with Wheeler in front as Michel Desjardins brought the first caution on lap 3. Wheeler stayed in front on the restart but two laps later George Renaud used the outside lane to get pass by Wheeler on lap 5, Gilles Godard stopped in turn 4 and brought the yellow on the next lap.
Renaud got a good start along with Ghyslain Valade now second with Rock Aubin in third; Aubin grabbed second over Valade at the halfway point and was now chasing the leader as Joey Ladouceur stopped in the front of the grandstand on lap 11. Renaud still first with Aubin following him as a great battle for third was going on, Aubin was on the backbumper of Renaud with 5 to go, Ricky Thompson brought the yellow with only 2 laps to do. Renaud led the final laps to win the feature over Aubin and Valade. Renaud had a perfect night winning the first heat, Ladouceur and Bissonnette won the others.
In the Semi-Pro feature, Alex Burke was the early leader when Benoit Dubois got off the track in turn 4 and caution came out. When the race resumed, Burke was the lead and led for another lap when Derek Cryderman hit the wall in turn 4 and yellow is out. Kevin Fetterly JR is now the new leader on the restart as Benoit Dubois and Brent Kelsey got together in turn 4 on lap 3.
Fetterly in the lead with Gaetan Amesse now in second, when 2 laps later a 2-car tangle in the backstretch brought another caution. On the green Fetterly pulled away on the field and built himself a comfortable lead as Robert Delormier made a 360 in the backstretch on lap 8. Fetterly was able to resist a final caution and led the last laps to win the feature over Amesse and Jeff Philips completed the podium. Joe Woods, Derek Cryderman and Gaetan Amesse won the heats.
Jean-Paul Laberge took the early lead in the Semi-Pro feature that was postponed from last week, Guy Régimbald had a good start and was on the backbumper of Laberge with Benoit Dubois in the mix. The first caution came out of lap 4 when an accident occurred in the backstretch. Régimbald powered by Laberge on the restart with Dubois also passing Laberge for second on lap 5.
Alex Burke and Wes Bilmer got together in turn 4 at halfway point and yellow is back out. Brent Kelsey got pass Régimbald when the green lights came back out and they only did one lap before a car stopped in the backstretch. Kelsey stayed first and led the final laps of the feature and won the first feature of the season over Régimbald and Steve Harrigan completes the top 3.
Trevor Gaucher got the lead in the 12-lap mini stock feature but got passed by Jean-Marc Larose in a 3-wide move on lap 2 when caution came out on the following lap for Mark Radbourne. Larose keeps the lead on the start with Ronnie Tyo taking second, when an accident occurred in the frontstretch. Larose and Tyo got into a good battle when the race resumed and went at it for a few laps when a few cars got tangled in the front stretch. Larose is still in front with Gerry Oszczakiewicz now battleling for second with Tyo but he was able to resist, Tyo was able to pass Larose in the last turn to win the mini-stock feature. Cory Winters, Gerry Oszczakiewicz and Ronnie Tyo won the heat races.
