Scotia Speedworld's Weekly Racing Series Opens Season this Saturday!

(Halifax, NS, May 26, 2009) Scotia Speedworld's Weekly Racing Series will finally hit the track this Saturday, May 30th, after a long winter break.  The special Saturday afternoon event will feature all six Weekly Racing Series divisions.  Gates open at 12:00 noon with the green flag set to drop at 2:00 pm.  Tickets are available at the gate on race day only.

The Sojourn Signs Bandolero cars will be the first division to take the green flag this season.  Last year competition was strong in this young developmental division, which saw the tightest point battle out of all six Weekly Racing Series divisions.  Truro's Dylan Blenkhorn ultimately took home the title, with Brad Eddy and D.J Casey tied for second.  All three drivers are expected to compete again this season.

The Miller Tire Thunder and Lightning cars will follow the Bandolero's this Saturday at Scotia Speedworld.  Last year both divisions saw record car counts.  The Lightning division had twenty-six cars compete in '08, with the top seven competitors within 100-points of each other at seasons end.  The Thunder division had the highest car count of any division with 46 cars taking a green flag over fourteen race events.

The Hobby Stock division has a new Sponsor, Lockhart Truck Center, as well as some new competition in the form of ¼ ton trucks.  For the first time Scotia Speedworld is allowing competitors to build ¼ ton trucks to race in the Hobby Stock division in 2009.  Trucks must be built to the current Hobby Stock rules with the option of a four point roll cage. These trucks will evolve into a new division as the Hobby Stock class is phased out. The new Truck division for the future will see the trucks fully caged with V8 motors.

Next up on the season opener docket is the Legend division. The Legends are 5/8-scale replicas of the '34 and '37 Chevrolet and Ford (coupes and sedans) models that produce some fierce racing when the green flag is thrown.  The Legend division has quickly grown to be a crowd favourite.  Last year's Champion Ian Mollins traveled from Moncton each week to compete in this sporty division.

Finally, fans will be treated to the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman series.  The Sportsman are the premier division of the Weekly Racing Series.  Sportsman cars are full bodied stock cars built from the ground up and made for racing at racetracks throughout North America.  Last season Terry Roma of West Chezzetcook beat out Kennetcook's Harry Ross White for the Championship by just five points.  Both teams are expected to battle it out again for the prestigious 2009 title.

Admission for the Weekly Racing Series season opener is $12.00 for adults; $2.00 for youth aged 8-15; children 7 and under are admitted free. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Pit admission is $15.00 and restricted to those 16 and older.  Tickets are available at the gate on race day.
