Kawartha Speedway 2009 - Gettin' Back At It

By Jim Clarke, Kawartha Speedway PR/Clarke Motorsports Communications

After a brief, 1 week intermission – one of 3 the track will take during the 2009 season – Kawartha Speedway roars back to life Friday, June 19th with a full night of action featuring the NAPA Auto Parts Late Models, Better Carpet Thunder Cars and the Discount Car and Truck Rentals Mini Stocks.  The highlight of the evening will be a 100 lap invitational event for the headline Late Models.

After just 2 weeks of action, the ’09 season is starting to look like the 2008 campaign.  To quote baseball legend Yogi Berra “It’s like deja vu all over again”.  Cavan, Ontario’s Dan McHattie currently sits a-top the Late Model point standings.  The track champion from last year has a 13 point cushion over veteran Tom Walters.  Brandon Watson, Dave Morgan and Bryan Mercer round-out the top 5 runners.  McHattie and Watson have found their way to the Late Model victory lane in feature race action.

In the Thunder Car division, Willie Reyns of Port Hope, Ontario leads the points chase by just 5 markers over Kyle Donaldson and John Baker Jr.  Both Reyns and Donaldson have won feature races during the early season.  Rookie Chad Strawn, 2007 champ Steve Mayhew and Howie Crowe finish-out the top 5.  On the Mini Stock side of things, the Moroney Racing team controls 4 of the top five point positions.  Last year’s high point man Jason Juriga of Peterborough occupies the top spot by a margin of 13 over Dwight Lavoie.  Mike Wallace, Shanna Moroney-Juriga and ‘Too’ Moroney fill-out the final 3 spots in the Mini fast 5.  Juriga and ‘Too’ Moroney each have feature race wins.

Kawartha Speedway is located at Fraserville, Ontario (just minutes from Peterborough) near the intersection of highway 28 and the 35/115.  For full details on the 2009 season – including the American-Canadian Tour Summer Sizzler Sunday, July 12th and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season finale Saturday, September 26th – see www.kawarthaspeedway.com.
