NASCAR Canadian Tire Series - SIMONE FINISHES SECOND IN DICKIES 200 AT MOSPORT

Bowmanville, ON, Sunday June 14, 2009: Anthony Simone made his sophomore visit to Bowmanville Ontario’s Mosport International Raceway this weekend in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and came home with a second place finish. Simone’s Holland Landing team have picked up the pace in 2009 with two top five finishes in the first three race events including a fifth last weekend at Delaware Speedway.

Simone quickly adjusted to the challenging 4 km, 10 turn road course and was fourth quickest out of the 24 cars in attendance when practice concluded. Qualifying went the similar for the No. 95 Crown Modular/United Lumber Monte Carlo driver as he qualified sixth with a time of 1:25.944 while pole sitter Andrew Ranger notched a 1:25.119. “We have a very good car,” stated Simone after qualifying. “If we could have tested it before this race we think we could be even better but we just finished putting it together [Friday] night.”

Simone took the green flag for the start of the Dickies 200 on Sunday afternoon and it was immediately apparent he would be a contender. In the early stages of the race, Simone kept his No. 95 Crown Modular/United Lumber Monte Carlo on the back bumper of the lead pack of cars. When pit stops started to cycle through Simone moved to the front and gained those five valuable bonus points for leading a lap. When he brought the car to pit road for tires and fuel crew chief Thatcher Krupp and car chief Giulio Montanari made the call for two tires and fuel. With all the other teams having taken on four tires, Simone gained a substantial lead when all pit stops had cycled through. A hard charging Andrew Ranger would not be denied though and a little nudge to Simone would see Ranger dart past the No. 95 Monte Carlo and he would cruise on to victory. With the tires starting to fade over the final laps, Simone held his own and finished second with hard charging J. R. Fitzpatrick rounding out the podium finishers. “This is my best finish ever” stated a smiling Simone after the race. “To come from open wheel cars to these full body cars and to finish up front in our second year is just awesome. A great call by Thatcher & Giulio for two tires gave us the track position we needed.”

The Dickies 200 from Mosport International Raceway will be broadcast on TSN Sunday June 28th at 11:30 a.m. EST.

Simone’s No. 95 Crown Modular/United Lumber Monte Carlo is unofficially being shown in fourth in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series point standings. The teams will have the next three weekends off and will then head back to Autodrome St. Eustache for race #4 of the 13 scheduled NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events.
