NASCAR Canadian Tire Series: Strong run for Whissell foiled with bad luck on pit stop at Dickies 200

Jarrad Whissell finished 18th at the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Dickies 200 at Mosport after spending the better part of 3 minutes in the pits on lap 26 of the 51 lap event.  Whissell had a strong run before the pit stop, running in the top 15.

The #44 SMS Equipment/Komatsu Ford Fusion Started 16th on the grid after experiencing some carburetor issues in qualifying.  Whissell ran strong up to his pit stop, running in the top 15 and as high as 5th place during the pit stop sequence. When he came in for his pit stop on lap 26 the Whissell Motorsport crew sprang into action, adding fuel and changing tires.  Unfortunately one of the right front wheel studs came loose and got jammed. The crew worked to free the stud and get it back into place, losing 3 minutes in the process.  “I have to thank the crew for the excellent job they did all weekend and especially on the pit stop, that was just bad luck,” Whissell comment on the pit stop.

Once back on the track Whissell was three laps down.  Despite his frustration over the pit stop Whissell continued to run consistent times and chased down the 21 car of Jason White running in 15th with 10 laps to go.  “Jason and I had a good run together – I did not want to race him too hard as I was down a couple laps and he is in the points race.”  Whissell said. “The car was pretty good all weekend, although at the end of the long runs in the race the car under steered badly.  We have some set up changes for next race.”  The team’s next stop is the NASCAR Canadian Tire event at the Rexall Edmonton Indy on July 25th.

The team will be installing NASCAR’s new spec engine in the car for the Edmonton race.  “It is a good packaged based on the GM LS2 V8, lighter weight and a little more horsepower than we have been running,” Crew chief Brent Hougestol said.  The team expects to be on track at Race City in early July to test the engine and they expect to see some improvements.

Whissell Motorsports Team would like thank their sponsors SMS Equipment, Komatsu, Wolseley, Lafarge and Frontier Fabrication for their continued support.  The team continues to search for additional sponsorship partners for the remaining races.
