Varney Speedway Race Recap and Results for Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28, 2009
Multiple Winners In Varney's Double Header
Saturday proved to be arguably the best race night of the season so far. The sun was shining, the grandstands were full and the drivers were ready to race. Sunday's Invitational Night narrowly missed cancellation as thunderstorms to the north and south of the speedway threatened to end the double feature minutes before it began. All of Varney Motor Speedway's regular racing divisions were included on the race card for both nights, giving the fans more than their money's worth.
Saturday nights Stock 4 feature saw a fan-favourite take the checkered for his first win of the season, while Sunday's race was a caution marred runaway. Hanover's #7 Charles Embro picked up his first win of the year after #9 Dennis Cremasco, who appeared to on his way to the win, got together with #86 Nick Clarke while battling for the lead. The two spun and Embro sped on for the win. Sunday's feature was filled with caution flags and; time wise; ended up being the longest race at Varney so far this season. With several cars visiting from other tracks, it was #2 Billy Mellenhorst perservering through the crashes leading every lap of the race for the win. Saturday's qualifying heat races were won by #28 Jim Suter, Cremasco, Clarke and #38 Sherry Smart. Sunday's qualifying heat races were won by #51 Clark Hartman, Mellenhorst, Embro and Cremasco.
The Street Stock class continues to be dominated this year by #3 Gary Atkinson and #93 Bill Cole. While some drivers have come close, running up front in the late stages of the race, the two Hanover drivers have wrangled every feature race win so far this season. On Saturday night, #99 Jamie Hunt may have been the only driver to break the streak but a broken rear axle ended the young driver's night early as Cole cruised on to the win. Sunday, Hunt was back and on Cole's back bumper for most of the race; even ducking down to the inside of the veteran on several occassions; but for the second night in a row, Bill Cole stole the show as Hunt faded late. Saturday's qualifying heat races were won by #48 Mke Wilson and #3 Jaz (substituting for Gary Atkinson). Sunday's qualifiers were won by Atkinson and Cole.
The top five ran nose-to-tail in Saturday night's Super Street Stock feature race as the laps wound down. Hungry for the win, #61 Chad Eden; who was running second and not willing to settle; made a last lap - last turn bump and run on race leader #56 Bobby Zee exiting turn four but as the two ran to the checkers, it was Bobby Zee hanging on for his second feature race win of the young season. Sunday's Invitational feature saw the usual suspects upfront and from the pole position, #83 Scott Way led every lap for the win. Heat races on Saturday were won by #85 Matt Clarke and #72 Marty Monette while Sunday's heats were won by Way and #77 Rob Brown.
A vicious wreck in the Late Models heats saw last years defending points champion #96 Monty Kelly walk away from what was left of his car after sailing off the track at the top of turn one and slamming rear first into the tire and dirt bank barrier. Kelly was okay but his car looked about two feet shorter than it was before the wreck. In the feature race Saturday night, #27 Doug Cameron led for several laps before handing the reigns over to series points leader #18 Jason McLellan. Building momentum over the last couple of weeks, #2x Mike Brown; surprising to many; was able to keep pace with the #18 car even challenging for the lead late but, McLellan proved to too strong and held on for the checkered flag. As if that wasn't enough, McLellan took the lead on lap two after starting fourth in Sundays feature and sailed on to his second win of the weekend. Qualifying heat races were won by McLellan and #2 Ed Peterson on Saturday night and, Brown and McLellan on Sunday night.
Making his return to the All Pro Modifieds at Varney Speedway, #3 Glen Coulson was quick to rekindle old on track rivalries from years gone by. In Saturday's feature race, Coulson battled late with #12 Justin McLellan. While the rust appeared to be fully shaken off, Coulson settled for second as McLellan took the checkered flag. Sunday night saw #8 Gary Mclean; who had front end problems the night before; take the lead early. Coulson and McLellan tried to run him down but, McLean held on for the win. Mod heats were won by McLean and Coulson on Saturday as well as on Sunday.
The Train feature on Saturday night saw the Markdale Salvage Crushers take the win but it was Sunday's feature that saw the most action. From a three-wide standing start, the Trains took the green in what was the most exciting Train race this season. The competition stayed tight for the entire race.Three and sometimes four wide racing with multiple battles for the lead had the fans on the edge of their seats. The Crushers were going for the long-weekend sweep but, momentum is everythng in this class and The Train Wreck didn't lose much of it as they were able to hold the field back for the win.
Point battles remain tight in all divisions with the top five often seperated by only five or six points. If you are curious to see what all the excitment is about, Varney Motor Speedway runs the best grass-roots stock car racing in the province every Saturday night.
