London, ON, Monday June 8, 2009: No. 39 Dickies/NMT Dodge Avenger driver Dave Whitlock had high hopes for a podium finish on Saturday night as he returned to his home track Delaware Speedway for the final time in his racing career. After three green, white checkered attempts to finish the event, Whitlock would find himself coasting across the finish line in seventh.
Whitlock and the No. 39 Dickies/NMT/Prostate Canada Canada/POINTTS team were penalized one qualifying lap for being late to final inspection prior to qualifying. The Dodge Avenger driver would give it his best shot and with lap two usually being the best of the two lap effort, Whitlock would settle for 12th quickest time. “We aren’t too worried about starting back in twelfth,” stated Whitlock. “You always want to start up close to the front, but the first race in St. Eustache we started 11th and won.”
When the green dropped for the start of the Delaware 200 presented by Belfor Restoration Services, Whitlock quickly new the handling of the car was not where he wanted it to be. With practice under the hot sun in the afternoon and the race starting under cooler dark conditions the track had changed significantly. On lap 62 Whitlock brought his car to the pits and the team added fuel and made a major chassis adjustment. On lap 124 Whitlock brought his Dodge Avenger back to his crew for right side tires and some further adjustments. The Dickies/NMT driver reported the car was much better and he started to move back to the front of the field. On the third attempt at a green, white, checkered finish Whitlock was in fourth with a good shot at another podium finish when the motor quit. He was able to coast the car around the final lap and still posted a seventh place finish. “We were going for the podium on that last restart,” stated Whitlock after the race. “The car just kept getting better and better all night and we thought we had a chance to make it two podiums in a row but the engine quit and we had to coast across the finish line. Still a decent day for this Dickies/NMT team.”
D. J. Kennington led the most laps on route to victory on his home track. Ron Beauchamp Jr. posted his second podium finish in as many starts, taking second and the points lead. Scott Steckly finished third and Kerry Micks and Anthony Simone finished fourth and fifth respectively. Dave Whitlock is in second in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series points just nine markers behind Beauchamp.
